If you were to think about your ultimate style icon, who would it be? Over the last few decades, there have been a whole host of iconic ladies who have inspired and empowered the way we view our own personal style and beauty. I have several women who I look up to; Joan Collins and Isabella Blow, Charlotte Tilbury and Nigella Lawson. Then there are the more outrageous and avant garde styles of Ru Paul and Iris Apfel – insane make up skills and self confidence respectively. Finally, there are the red carpet belles such as Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and my personal favourite Blake Lively. In today’s post I am going to recreate the classic Old Hollywood glamour that Blake does so well. With loose Hollywood waves and a classic red lip, this is probably one of my favourite looks to wear. So simple to create, yet gives full impact and style; my quick and easy Blake Lively tutorial will transform your look in minutes.
Blake rocks the Hollywood wave look so well. Over the years, I have yearned for her wheaty blonde, sunkissed locks that are full of volume and thickness. I have total hair envy. Using the Remington Pearl conical wand, I sectioned my hair into three layers; the bottom, the middle and the top and curled two inch sections on each layer. The conical wand is fantastic for giving a range of curly hair styles but I find that it makes a Hollywood wave really easy to do. As you curl the hair into ringlets, let each ringlet drop and cool down without spraying any hairspray or product onto them. Once you have curled your hair, leave it all to cool down as you start on your make up.
A good make up look works best on a cleansed and moisturised face. I like to use Origins GinZing as a day time moisturiser as the gel formula sinks into skin quickly and leaves skin looking plumped up and awake. As Blake has a naturally golden glow, add a few drops of Clarins Radiance Booster drops into your moisturiser for a gradual tan. For a dewy base, I used Maybelline Dream Wonder Foundation which mimics your skin and leaves a flawless finish. One of my Holy Grail products is the YSL Toucé Eclat in 02, and the light reflecting particles gives the skin a natural luminosity. It’s perfect for bringing an ethereal glow to the high points of your face. A recent discovery is The Body Shop Honey Bronze illuminator in 01. It’s a creamy highlighter that can be applied straight from the pot to your cheekbones, and the creaminess of the product makes it easy to blend. A light dusting of Lord & Berry Bronzer in Light and a flush of colour from MAC Mineralise Blush in Dainty finish off the complexion. Brows are then lightly defined with Anastasia Brow Wiz, keeping within the natural shape and then brushed through using the spoolie for a polished finish.
For a Hollywood Glamour look, Blake keeps eyes simple but with a sexy intensity. Her stunning blue eyes are emphasised with black winged liner, lashings of mascara and a subtle yet sexy under eye brightness and inner eye highlight. Using your ring finger, pat Maybelline Color Tattoo in Creamy Beige across the eye lid to neutralise the lid colour. This also leaves a smooth base and primes the eye for your eyeshadow. I used Charlotte Tilbury The Sophisticate eyeshadow palette as the matte shades sit well on the lid without creasing throughout the day. Using the lightest colour across the lid and the matte tan shade in the crease leaves eyes looking enhanced and wide open. Bourjois have brought out some fantastic products lately and the Bourjois Liner Pinceau is one of the longest lasting liners that I have tried. Line your lid and wing out for a seductive look. Bourjois Colorband 2 in 1 liner and shadow sticks are a makeup bag essential. I have used Beige Minimal; a champagne coloured pencil, to line my water line and to blend into the inner corner of my eye. I then used Benefit Roller Lash, one of the best mascaras I’ve ever used, to coat my lashes. I find this mascara to be so good that it eliminates the need to apply false lashes! I love how Blake has a gorgeous little mole on her cheek, near her nose. It’s very stereotypical of Hollywood glamour, so I used the Stila Waterproof liner in Brown to create my very own.
A Blake Lively red lip couldn’t be completed without the L’Oreal Privée Blake’s Red. Blake’s Red is a pure ruby red, designed for warm skin tones like myself and of course, Blake. The formula is matte and works well with MAC Ruby Woo lip pencil. I find that the lipstick transfers as a semi matte finish but has the staying power of a pure matte. It lasts around 6 hours on me, and keeps lips moisturised. It’s a very creamy formula for a matte lipstick, and doesn’t drag or pull when applied.
Once you have finished your make up, it’s time to finish of your Blake Lively look by brushing out those curls into a loose Hollywood wave. Using a paddle brush, gently brush through the curls. As the curls are all of the same width and shape, they should fall into a loose S shape as they are brushed through. Run a smoothing cream through your hair to reduce any frizz and to allow the curls to sit in the right shape. A smoothing cream also adds a touch of glossiness and lets hair move naturally without the curls separating.
I feel just like Blake Lively, without the couture and bank balance! What do you think of this Old Hollywood glamour look? Let me know in the comments below.
