Think You Can’t Afford To Take A Break This Summer? Think Again
If your finances are looking a little shoddy, then you might be tempted to skip travelling this summer so you can knuckle down and do some work. However, if you’re willing to look hard enough, you can find some surprisingly cheap vacations that are not only enjoyable but give you the time and space you need to recover from a hard year too.
In many ways, holidays aren’t optional. We need breaks to explore faraway lands to mark the end of one working year and the start of another. Avoiding breaks entirely is bad for your health and wellbeing. You’re much more likely to feel burnt out if all you do is work and no play.
Take a look at some of these fabulously cheap holidays you can afford, even if you’re on a tight budget.
Antigua
You might think that travelling to the island of Antigua would be too expensive if you live in the mainland US or Europe. However, the island attracts thousands of tourists every year and fills regular flights to and from its main airport.
Antigua is the largest of all the English-speaking Leeward Islands. It’s small in size, just fourteen miles wide, but has plenty of charm and history, especially around the port of St John’s.
Compared to many Caribbean islands, the cost of things like food and entertainment is cheap. Local wages are low, so hotels and restaurants can bring the overall price of their services down. You can pick up a sit-down meal in a nice restaurant for less than ten dollars.
The Algarve, Portugal
You wouldn’t think that the Algarve in Portugal would be a cheap holiday destination with its stunning coastline and beautiful seaside towns, but it is. The Portuguese tourism industry has managed to do this through a variety of impressive innovations. The primary way they’re got the price down is through scale. There are a lot of places to stay here, all conveniently close to local airports. Yes, they pack them high and sell them cheap, but in return, you get access to a beautiful part of the world with excellent weather and plenty of surf from the Atlantic.
Antalya, Turkey
Travelling to Turkey has always been surprisingly inexpensive. Unlike the south of France, it’s not a haunt for the world’s super-wealthy. Just like the Algarve, the Turkish authorities recognise that the best approach is through volume. The more people they can attract to their country (and the cheaper they can house them), the better.
Antalya is close to some impressive cultural monuments, making it an excellent place for a spot of sightseeing as well as relaxing by the pool.
Berlin, Germany
People from all over Europe flock to Berlin. Why? The city offers one of the best places to drink on the planet: beer prices are surprisingly low. The remnants of Soviet rule have also left their mark on the city with parts of it remarkably cheap compared to other European capitals. If you’re watching the pennies, skip Paris and London – go with Berlin.
