A month into 2022 and I can safely say that it’s not been the best start to the year. In a nutshell, I’ve got a compressed nerve in my left leg, caused by my herniated discs in my back and it has made me immobile. Combined with pain management, loss of independence to do basic tasks and how drowsy I am most of the time, it’s been quite traumatic to say the least. I’ve tried to keep a smile on my face and laugh it off, and as the saying goes if you don’t laugh, you’d cry. How true that is although there have been some epic cries of frustration, panic and worry as I potentially may need surgery to correct the problem.

To help me, and hopefully to help others, I’ve put together some tips that have helped me over the last few weeks to keep me as upbeat as possible whilst I work through this situation until I regain full health again.

Have a Good Support Network

Having any kind of debilitating injury can leave you feeling vulnerable and alone if you don’t have the right support network around you. From friends and family, to your work colleagues and online friends, I know that should I need anything during my time of need that they will be there for me. Whether I need shopping, a bag of treats or just cheering up, I have people around me to reach out to in my hours of need. Let’s consider a scenario where you get hurt in a car accident; you would want your family and friends to be there to support you. Most importantly, you may need to get in touch with legal attorneys to help you get fair compensation for your damage. You can read here for more information.

However, a support network means more than friends and family, we also need some professional services to reach out to at critical times. If you suffer an unexpected accident on the road, for instance, you will need car accident lawyers to help you recover and get the compensation you deserve after the trauma you experienced. Make sure you store numbers for professional services such as this for when you need them.

As I’m not getting chance to see my family very much, Astley Clark Jewellers have given me a gift so special that I don’t think I’ll ever take it off. A new addition to my demi fine jewellery collection is the Deco white sapphire sterling silver locket with a picture of me and my girls inside. The range of locket necklaces is gorgeous, and I’m very tempted to treat myself to the locket bracelet as well.

Invest in a V Shaped Pillow

I can’t express enough at just how much a V shaped pillow helps anyone who needs extra support. I have two; one for when I’m sleeping which keeps me in place in bed, which helps to take pressure off my leg and back, and the other is for day to day use to keep me comfortable and supported whilst sat up.

With a teddy bear fabric, this V shaped pillow is firm so makes it ideal for placing it behind you to help you prop yourself up. It also makes for a great nap pillow. It’s from Marks and Spencer and is available in cream or grey for £19.50. I’m so pleased I got this one, it’s so cosy and comfortable and feels like a big hug.

Find Balance with Your Mental Health

There is very little point in improving your physical health if it means that your mental health will suffer. Not least because it will often result in falling back into old habits. For example, a diet cannot be sustainable if there is no enjoyment from the foods you eat. Similarly, you may struggle to simply give up smoking. Switching to Delta 8 Disposables can help you strike the right balance to make a significant health improvement. The ingredients can aid physical and mental health in a range of situations and be used to manage various conditions Crucially, there won’t be any risk of going back to cigarettes. When you find the sweet spot that delivers health and happiness, success is assured.

Be Kind to Yourself

I suppose this one could be self explanatory but when you’re in a situation like myself, you realise how hard you are on yourself. Due to my immobility and the fact that I am unable to bear weight on my left leg, it’s a damn struggle to do normal day to day tasks such as showering, brewing up and cleaning. I’ve had to be quite firm with myself and tell myself that I can only do what I can do. As I am only contained to one room of the house, there’s barely any mess to clean to make the most of not cleaning. If I can’t shower, have a wash with a flannel. Being less harsh on yourself will really help your emotional wellbeing.

I did treat myself to a bath with my favourite Westlab bath salts the other night. I love Epsom salts for a relaxing treat and the scent combinations that Westlab make are wonderful. My current bag is the Pink Gin which is a juniper berry, pomegranate and lime blend. It smells amazing and brings me to a heavenly state of relaxation. Whilst taking a bath is almost like a military operation, it’s definitely worth it once I get in there.

Keep on Top of Skincare

This is the one that has been really getting me down as my skin has always been in pretty good condition. The culprit that has ruined my skin is tramadol and it’s given me the driest complexion that I’ve ever experienced. I’ve since swapped to morphine so it’s got a lot worse over the last few days, so I’m making some changes to make sure I’m looking after my skin. Keeping on top of a twice daily routine with hydration through the day is the only thing I can do right now.

I’ve been treating myself with some new products including the Ole Henriksen Strength cream, The GRUFF STUFF Spray on Moisturiser, and Dr Levy Pro Peel Mask. I’ll do a full review later down the line on these to get a fair evaluation but they are really helping me.

How long I’ll be in this predicament for is beyond me right now. I’m just hoping it’s not months and months as I’d quite like to get my life back. However I am making good progress with my giant cross stitch piece so I suppose that’s a silver lining!
