How to inject romance into your relationship
Even the most besotted couples can find it hard to keep the romance alive after several years together. Here are four ways to invest in your relationship to reignite the spark of your initial attraction.
Prioritise quality time
Especially with hybrid roles here to stay – which is blurring more than ever the line between work and leisure time – it can be challenging to incorporate quality time into your routine. Mundane tasks such as cooking, cleaning and childcare often take precedence, but investing hours into your relationship should be equally high on your to-do list to keep the flame alive.
Set aside time to reconnect with each other away from daily distractions and digital devices. Choose an activity which allows you to focus entirely on each other. This can be as simple as enjoying a coffee in a café or a full-blown fancy dinner at a local restaurant.
Thoughtful gestures
For everyone, thoughtful gestures – whether physical presents, kind actions or unprompted compliments – make us feel appreciated and loved, whether given by family members, colleagues or your significant other. This feeling of being seen and understood naturally creates and enhances your bond, and gives you confidence in the longevity and truth of the relationship.
Plan secret surprises throughout the year. These could include cleaning the house while they’re out, cooking their favourite meal and bringing home flowers. Be spontaneous with your gestures and try to match your partner’s mood. A small note can be a lifesaver before a scary workday and emphasise you’ve been listening to and are supportive of their woes.
Enhance intimacy
Physical touch was established as one of the human love languages in the 1990s, and although the theory of love languages is in doubt, there’s no doubt that it’s a primal need we’re hardwired to give and receive. In romantic relationships, it’s a valuable part of validating your attraction and appreciating your partner inside and out.
Wearing clothes that invite touch such as silky bras and underwear sets, cashmere cardigans and wool jumpers will help encourage each other in this regard and make hugs second nature. Small gestures such as placing your hand on theirs or touching toes can be incredibly comforting and ignite the spark of electricity.
Honest communication
It might not sound sexy, but nothing is more romantic than clear and honest communication. Relieve any anxiety your partner may be feeling around the relationship by being forthright with your thoughts and emotions, and asking them to share in return. Encouraging open conversation will make you both feel safe expressing your love, and raising anything that may be hindering your happiness in the relationship.
Talking specifically about romantic needs and desires is important too, as these are key to feeling fulfilled and content as a couple. Don’t shy away from anything, and reassure your partner that it’s a non-judgemental space to share your private thoughts.
