Big Home Improvements For Big Impact

While it is the small details that make a home, like the little plant that you have had for years, and the candles that are lit just every so often. That is what makes it unique. But when it comes to impact, it’s rarely the small things like tealight candle holders and placemats that get people talking.

If you’ve owned your house for a few years, depending on your financial circumstance, you might be looking to remortgage, or maybe you had an offset home loan which meant you’ve made fast repayments and have some free cash. And that typically means – getting work done on the house.

There are two ways to look at this. Either it is an investment because you want to sell and move, or you have no plans on moving but would love the extra space.

Here are some big home improvement projects that tend to have the most significant impact.

Conservatory

There is a reason these are so eye-catching when people are looking to buy homes. They provide an extra ‘living’ space. Some families use it as a toy room, others a study or office, some even build in a bar. But if you can get the permission to do it, and have an idea of how big you want it, you can add some serious square meters on to your dwelling. There are a few things to consider, like the type of glass you want – self-cleaning is a popular choice. The style of roof, all glass? Or would you prefer something more roof like?

Loft Conversion

While the conservatory will add a fantastic amount of space to the downstairs communal area, a loft conversion can become (most often) another bedroom or an office. Another bedroom typically adds a lot of value to a house. The conversion itself may only set you back between 3-7 thousand depending on big, and your finishing. But may bring in an extra 15k on an asking price should you decide to sell it late on. With loft conversions, the more light you can bring into it, the better. So think about a few skylights to really flood the room.

Kitchen

If your kitchen is dated, has MDF cupboards, and none of the white goods are fitted, then it might be time for a facelift. Looking at things like agas, built in washing machines and fridges make the kitchen look neater. Without much effort, really. You can get kitchens designed and fitted for upwards of around 2k. But ideally, you will want to have something that is going to last for years, not something that you’ll need to replace too soon. When you have the kitchen designed, they tend to use the space better to get what you want in there. And, people spend so much time cooking and chatting over food that the kitchen is a significant impact zone.

Colour

If you love the house the way it is but want to do something to improve it, then simply putting a fresh coat of paint on the walls will change the look and feel of the space. White is a great idea to make a room look more substantial, and accent walls can really bring the wow factor.
