Whether you’re a keen gardener or a novice with next to no experience, now is the perfect time of year to get some fresh air and make the most of your outdoor space. The psychological benefits of gardening are vast and varied while taking a break from the TV or your computer screen can also be hugely advantageous for your physical wellbeing.

Over the winter, it’s likely that your garden has received minimal care and attention as, understandably, you left it to fend for itself while you kept warm indoors. But now that the better weather has arrived – and the country remains under lockdown restrictions – it’s the ideal opportunity to pull the gloves on and get stuck in. Not all gardens are the same, however, so how can you make the most of your outdoor space?

Do the basics

Even a task as fundamental as mowing the lawn can transform the way your garden looks. Be sure to strim the edges for that perfect, tidy finish and spring is an ideal time to put down some grass seed if you have any bare patches showing through. On top of that, pulling up any weeds can make your flower beds look much neater, and it will provide extra room for your remaining plants to flourish.

Tips for smaller spaces

Of course, not everyone is fortunate enough to be blessed with a large garden featuring a lawn and flower beds. Some homes come with a small balcony or paved area attached – but that’s no reason not to take good care of your outdoor space. You can make the most of the area available by investing in some attractive potted plants and hanging baskets to add a splash of colour. If the dimensions allow, you might also want to think about incorporating a small seating area where you can relax at the end of a long, hard day.

Tackling larger projects

If you have the time, money and inclination, you may wish to consider taking on a bigger development that will truly transform your garden. For example, if you want to attract more wildlife then you could do some research into the best plants for pollinators. Or, if you want to incorporate a low-maintenance area that doubles up as an al fresco dining space, a patio is the perfect solution. By laying some flags in a corner of the garden that catches the sun, you might find yourself spending more and more of your time enjoying your outdoor space.
