Old properties are full of charm. They have all kinds of weird and wonderfully shaped rooms, nooks and crannies and original features that make them so much more interesting than the new builds that dominate the market today. They tend to be more spacious with their big windows and high ceilings, and for some, only an older property will do when it comes to finding their dream home. However, old houses do come with their problems too. From structural issues that might be evident to asbestos and lead paint causing potential health issues, to the way the home looks from the outside. Some older properties might hold fantastic potential, but be real ugly ducklings unless they’ve had some work done to their exterior. If you’ve found your dream property but want to make it look prettier on the outside, here are some ideas for going about it.
Rendering/ painting/ coating
Either painting the bricks or having some kind of rendering or coating added to the external walls of the house can make a tremendous amount of difference. You can even get all weather exterior wall coatings so your home will be more protected from the elements, as well as looking nicer too. If your old property is made out of ugly grey concrete, the bricks are in a bad way or you have an old fashioned covering such as pebble dashing which is past its best, changing this will have the biggest impact overall.
New windows
New windows will make any home look better. If the windows in your older property havent been changed in a long time then they’ll need doing for practical purposes anyway (such as for security and keeping the home warm). Have a think about different styles and materials for the frames. For example, if you’re having rendering done then you’ll want to choose something that works well with this.
Fences and garage doors
Painting, or completely replacing front garden fences and garage doors will make your property look so much nicer and better cared for. Particularly if the older types were in a bad way. Again, there are so many different styles and colours to choose from, make sure they go with the overall theme that you’re aiming for with the property.
Gardens
Finally, simply tidying up the front garden will have a huge impact. Depending on the current state of affairs, you might need a landscape company to completely renovate, or it could be a project you take on yourself. Mow the law, add some flowers to the flowerbeds, prune larger shrubs and trees and add hanging baskets next to the door. It makes the home look loved and well cared for.
Have you ever renovated an older property? What would your dream house look like?
