The Best of Gucci Beauty – My Thoughts
I have tried a lot of makeup over the years and there’s nothing I love more than trialling new products to be able to give my honest and open opinion. In 2019 Gucci Beauty rebranded their old and not very well known beauty range for the new luxurious range that started off with lipsticks before it launched the pressed powder and set the beauty world alight. Of course, I had to purchase one immediately and as Gucci Beauty expanded it’s line of products, I expanded my collection. There are many more items that I would like but Gucci Beauty is a premium and high end brand, so comes with a premium price tag and considering I’ve splashed out nearly £300 on the products I’m sharing today, I’m being sensible. For once. I would like a couple more lipsticks though.
I do feel that since Alessandro Michele took over as creative director in 2015, Gucci has had a complete turnaround and has become a brand that is more covetable than ever. The reinvention of the previous, and albeit boring Gucci Beauty in its stiff black packaging with double G design embellishment everywhere has made such a difference. The packaging is girly and romantic, luxurious and absolutely Instagrammable. The double GGs have been replaced with the classic and iconic word Gucci. It’s branded yet not obnoxious and I absolutely love the entire brand.
The Lipsticks
The range of lipsticks from Gucci Beauty is huge. Not only do the shades span over around 100 different colours but there are now five different finish options and a selection of matching lip liners. I do only have one shade in my Gucci Beauty collection, and I actually got mine for £17.99 at TK Maxx rather than paying the full price of £35. Weirdly, it’s also not a discontinued shade; 402 Vantine Fuchsia. A cool toned bright pink, it does pay homage to the old me who used to rock a bright pink lip and I couldn’t resist it.
The caps of the lipsticks distinguish between the finishes and the Gucci Beauty website has so much information about each finish.
- Turquoise Lid – Lip balm, translucent finish
- Vintage Floral Lid – sheer lip colour, luminous finish
- Black and Gold Lid – glow and care lip colour, wet glow finish
- Gold Art Deco Lid – intense colour, satin finish
- Gold parallel lines Lid – ultra pigmented colour, matte finish
All lipsticks can be worn alone, or layered with other colours to create a custom shade. They are also safe to use on the eyes for a lid colour and as they are a cream product they can be used on the cheeks. I love how they look, they’re so luxurious and have that Hollywood glamour vibe. They have a weight, expensive feel and the lip colour inside is smooth, creamy and wears so well on the lip. I need more.
The Powders
I actually swooned when I first saw the Gucci Beauty matte compact powder. It is just so beautiful. Art Deco inspired, with incredible craftmanship, it looks very expensive and is perfectly made. It looks just how designer makeup should look and I didn’t mind spending that amount of money on it as it looks like it’s worth every penny. Which it is. It’s one of my favourite pressed powders to date. I did shade match on the website and went for shade 5. I think I’m a mix of shade 4 and 5 so I’m not too bothered that it is slightly darker on me as it blends out so well. There are 12 shades available so you will be sure to find one that works well with your skin tone.
It’s definitely a handbag compact and no need to worry about getting it scratched or damaged as it comes with a soft velvet pink pouch to keep it safe. The powder is incredibly finely milled and picks up on a fluffy brush or the powder sponge with ease. The lamellar powders and emollients in the formulation melt into the skin with ease, setting down foundation with a luminous finish. I do like using this on no makeup days to give a natural glow to my skin.
And then they brought out the Gucci Beauty Bronzing Powder and Summer 2020 was changed. Well, it wasn’t as we couldn’t really go anywhere but you know what I mean. Oh this powder, it’s stunning. The green and gold packaging grabbed my attention first of all. I love green and gold, it’s so beautifully vintage and glamourous and now, it’s so Gucci. I got shade 3 Medium which is perfect.
Again, it’s the most lightweight and silky soft powder that sweeps across your skin without being muddy or settling in one area. It diffuses well with a fluffy brush and the handy small brush inside the compact is ideal for on the go application. The result is a natural sun kissed glow that doesn’t look orange, and I adore it.
The Mascara
A product that I wish I didn’t like as I actually begrudge spending money on mascaras especially when I tend to use them up within 2 months. The Gucci Beauty mascara is incredible. I was lucky enough to have been given a handful of samples from the Gucci counter in Selfridges so I did get to try before I invested £30 into a mascara. It’s actually amazing. The pastel pink and gold lidded packaging gets full marks before opening it to reveal a plastic comb wand which are my favourite types of applicators. It grabs every single last lash and coats them with a carbon black mascara. One coat gives a nice coverage, length is expanded and they look fluttery and soft. Two coats gives the action. Blacker than black lashes, fanned out to perfection and every lash looking long and volumised. I hate to say it but this is one of the best mascaras that I have ever used in my life and has knocked the socks off all the others that I have loved before.
The Primer and Foundation
Here’s where it starts to get a little negative because I had very high hopes for this dream duo and sometimes, it really lets me down. Let’s start with the primer because I’ve not had any issues with this at all. The signature Gucci Beauty floral scent is very much present within the silky fluid which only needs a maximum of two pumps to cover all your face. It sits on the skin well, and I like to allow my skincare to have sunk in properly before starting my Gucci Beauty base products. It does even skin tone, and gives a really pretty luminous finish. It works very well under the pressed powder and the finish is almost like a layer of silk on the skin. It’s not sticky and looks and feels like a second skin. I really like the primer and what it does for me.
The Gucci Beauty foundation has been giving me some traumas though. I do my skincare well, I use good quality products and I focus on eradicating those dry patches of skin. What the Gucci Beauty foundation seems to do to me is enhance those dry patches. It doesn’t happen every time so I can’t pin it down to a certain skincare product. It doesn’t do it when I wear the primer and a different foundation so it can’t be the primer and it also doesn’t happen every time I wear the Gucci duo.
If you have drier skin, then I don’t think that this will work for you at all. It does say that it works on all skin types and I don’t have an issue with the oilier parts of my skin, but dryness is not good at all. The foundation does come in a huge 40 shades which is brilliant and it is very long wearing. I’m persevering because the finish does look beautiful, flawless and healthy. Plus I paid £46 for it so it will be getting used.
