In normal circumstances I would go through a mascara once every 3 months, meaning that I could give my honest opinions on how I found it a lot more frequently. Since working from home, barely wearing any makeup and the horrific hay fever that I’ve been exposed to this year, mascara has been at the very back of my mind. The Lancôme Lash Idole Mascara launched back in February of this year if I’m not mistaken and it’s taken me until now to get thoughts written up. It’s definitely worth the wait though as I am so happy with it and it’s knocked socks off some recent launches.

Weirdly, when Lancôme Lash Idole mascara launched there was an influx of new mascaras that were hitting the market. I’ve been very lucky and had several of them sent over to try but there has been just two mascaras that I have been using lately; one drugstore and this one. I have managed to use up a full deluxe sample size of the Lancôme Lash Idole since it’s launch and I’m working through full size a little more often now. When it comes to reviewing mascara, it’s really very easy to wear it once and say if you liked it or not but I often find that with mascara that I have a change of heart halfway through which I link to how it dries up and how it holds up as it ages and gets more and more air to it. There was another major launch at the time of Lancôme Lash Idole and I did really like it at first, started writing my review and then boom – hated it! I won’t say who that was but it doesn’t take a genius to work it out!

Starting with the packaging, it’s standard mascara packaging in a lovely rose gold and black. I would usually find that a high end mascara would be in more luxurious packaging with that weight behind it and you could be forgiven for thinking that this is a drugstore product. That being said, Lancôme have recently revealed their sustainability program with a focus on responsible packaging. I do like how the Lancôme Lash Idole mascara looks though – it’s in keeping with the brand and still does have an element of luxury.

I really really like the applicator on the Lancôme Lash Idole, it’s apparently got 125 different bristle sizes and 360 micro bristle. I love any mascara applicator that has the plastic bristles , I find them much easier to control and the way that they’re usually shaped means that the mascara gets on my lashes – every lash, even the tiny ones rather than messing up and sitting on my eyelid.

The formulation of the mascara is a non clumping, gel emulsion that gives a fan like effect and feather like feel. The first coat makes a huge difference. If you wanted a light and feather lash effect with a weightless wear then Lancôme Lash Idole has your back. It dries quite quickly, so getting on your second coat should be done without delay. If its dried down too much, I do find that it does look quite heavy and not the volumised, feathery long lashes that you can achieve from this mascara.

When it comes to taking it off at the end of the day, I would definitely recommend an oil or bi-phase remover before cleansing. It’s quite a toughie and sometimes my cleansing balms struggle to cut through it. Not a bad thing, as it does mean that it doesn’t budge during the day, nor does it flake. As the mascara has aged with more and more air getting to it, it has dried up somewhat but I do have a ritual for my mascaras where I pop them in a cup of hot water to keep them somewhat looser. I also need to mention that when it’s brand new it’s not one of those really wet mascaras that gives you spider lashes. Overall, it’s a great mascara and one that I will repurchase. I don’t tend to use a lot of high end mascaras just simply due to how often I replace them but there’s just something about Lancôme mascaras that have me hooked. They really are the best in the business.
