2021 Summer Makeup Trends with TK Maxx

It feels so good to be getting back into makeup again after going through a stale patch where I almost forgot what a blending brush did. It’s been so nice to sit at my dressing table and let my creative juices run wild, playing with textures and finishes, making custom colour eyeliners and feeling that pull of love for anything sparkly, shimmery or glittery. It’s also been quite exciting to get back out into town and mooch around the shops, and browse the beauty aisles in shops like TK Maxx. With all the goodies in store, I thought I would put together some tips and tricks with the summer makeup trends for 2021.

With summer just around the corner, restrictions lifting and a sense of normality resuming, 2021 isn’t cancelled as of yet. I’m finding joy in al fresco dining, picnics in the park and beer gardens and dressing up for no reason at all. My make up choices do seem to have changed a lot and I have definitely found that I’m erring towards a less is more base, a no make up make up daytime look and enhancing my natural look. Who would have thought that it would only take a global pandemic for me to get rid of my heavy matte full coverage foundation. All About The Base

My base of choice is one that could only be described as ‘mewy’. A combination of matte and dewy, I like to hydrate the drier areas and mattify the oilier areas for flawless, smooth canvas ready for makeup application. This technique has stuck with me for quite sometime, and using a mattifying primer on my T Zone means thats I am free from oil and shine throughout the day.

In the summer I like to move to a much sheerer base and a mineral powder foundation feels so much better in the warmer weather. The trend for no makeup makeup is big news for 2021 so a mineral powder foundation kit should be high on your list to purchase. Add in a mineral powder blush for an effortlessly fresh look.

If you do want to wear a liquid foundation, use a loose powder to blur and set, giving a soft focus and ethereal glow. Lighter than a pressed powder, the finely milled loose powder won’t get cakey or dry out skin and will hold make up in place from morning until night.

Tools of The Trade

I own a lot of makeup brushes, yet still cannot help but add more to my collection. When buying brushes, I look for a little bit of luxury, with a decent sized handle and ferule and the most beautiful of brush hairs. I personally prefer a blend of synthetic and goat hair brush for my eye makeup as I find that they work really well for me. My personal favourite brushes have to be a flat topped synthetic brush for liquid foundation, a tapered crease brush for eyes alongside a fluffy brush to diffuse and a flat shader for packing on shadow.

Let Your Eyes Do The Talking

In this mask wearing new world, those fabulous lipsticks in our collection are being shunned for beautiful bright eyes and subtle shimmers. A warm neutral palette is an essential to create desk to disco eyes, a wash of colour to even out your eyes or make an impact with a swoosh of glittery shadow. I also like to play with colour so a designer brand palette with intense shimmer shades and deeply pigmented powders comes in handy. The easiest way to do a smoky eye is to work with the darkest shade first using a smaller blending brush, and as you get to the lighter colours your brushes should get bigger. A flat shader works to pat colour on the lid. Use an eyeliner and smudge out before applying mascara and lashes and remember that what goes on the top of the eye, should go below under the lower lid. Simple!

Lips, Lips, Lips

If you do want to rock a fun lip underneath your mask then try this routine to ensure your lipstick stays in place and doesn’t smudge. First of all blot your lips to remove excess oil and take loose powder on a brush and dust over your lips. Apply your liquid lipstick just like this gorgeous designer bargain I found. Apply a second dusting of loose powder and a second coat to enhance colour payoff and ta-da!
