If you’re thinking of making your home eco-friendly, there are ways to do that without necessarily breaking your budget. When people think about an eco-friendly home, the first thing they consider is buying energy-efficient appliances or solar panels.

Unfortunately, we can’t all afford these super-expensive equipments and appliances. However, there are budget-friendly things that you can do in your home that will basically make your home more eco-friendly.

This way, you’ll be able to contribute in your own small way, to reducing carbon emissions and saving the planet. Remember, this beautiful planet is all we’ve got and we need to make sure it’s livable for our children and their kids. Let’s jump right into what you can do to make your home more eco-friendly.

Use LED Bulbs

LED bulbs are a highly efficient lighting source. They’re an energy-saving, eco-friendly option for lighting your home. The beautiful thing about these bulbs is that they come in many designs and shapes.

So, if you’re worried about them contrasting with your interior décor, don’t. There are many beautiful LED bulks that will match your home décor just fine and look great in it.

Use the Cold Water Setting in Your Washer

Heating is responsible for 90 percent of the electricity used by your washing machine. This means that if you skip washing with hot water, and use cold water instead, you’ll end up spending a lot less on your electricity bill, and generating less carbon dioxide.

Plus, your clothes will last much longer –hot water fades clothes faster, dull their color and weakens the materials– and you won’t need to spend as much money on clothes.

Check for Electricity from Renewable Energy Sources

Talk to your utility company about the possibility of switching your electricity source from fossil fuel-generated electricity to those generated by renewable natural resources like solar.

And before you say “I can’t afford solar panels”, there’s a great option known as community solar initiatives. These initiatives comprise solar farms that generate electricity and send it to the power grid.

Then, the electricity company sends that power out to customers who specifically requested it. It’s a pretty easy thing to do. You’ll just download a form from your electricity provider, fill out the necessary details, and the company will place you on that plan. Customers who choose this option get to enjoy a 10 percent discount on their electricity bills every month, as well as, reduce carbon emissions.

Grow and Nurture Plants in the Home

If you have some space in the backyard, why not plant a small garden. You can grow flowers, herbs, vegetables, spices, tomatoes, and any other small plant you fancy. This will make your home healthier, provide you with a steady source of healthy, organically grown vegetables that you can add to your meals, thus improving your odds of eating healthier.

Finally, you should stop buying water in single-use plastics. Single-use plastics are one of the biggest causes of pollution on the planet. Instead, buy a water filtration device and use that to purify your water at home. Getting rid of plastic bottles will instantly make your home eco-friendly, and the planet a little less polluted.
