Maison Margiela Replica Fragrances

It’s become quite apparent to me that I have a slight hoarding issue and the fear of getting rid of those items that I don’t wear, use or need, just in case that I may possibly want to wear, use or need it in the future. It’s a vicious cycle that I’m really trying to break but there is one product category that I am really struggling to with and that’s my perfume collection. The thing with perfume is that it is so personal and each fragrance that I own and wear is associated to so many memories that it makes it really difficult to part with. I get upset when I’m nearing the ends of bottles so having to declutter by choice is really not a good practice for me. The memories, thoughts and feelings that are evoked from a spritz of the certain fragrance are so special, and to use a scent to transport you to past memories is a wonderful concept. Maison Margiela have done just that with their collection Replica; a collection of fragrances that tell a story with every spritz and I have fallen in love with two fragrances from their 10 fragrance strong collection.

World Duty Free are the guys behind my newest obsession with the hottest fragrance brand at the moment, and I do not have any bad feelings about this. Back in September, I was lucky enough to be invited along to the World Duty Free airport event, and within my goody bag I found my very first Replica fragrance Beach Walk. It has only been a short period in that World Duty Free have gained Maison Margiela fragrances within their airport shopping so not only is Replica an amazing brand but you can also now get it at duty free prices before you fly off on your holiday. The Beach Walk fragrance couldn’t be more apt as an introduction to Replica and Maison Margiela, after all the airport is the best place to start your adventure towards memories of sun kissed skin and sea salted hair. I just wish that I had this to take with me to Bali back in May.

Before I go into each fragrance, I want to touch lightly on the packaging and detailing that is so unique. Each flacon is pure and minimal, with a clear glass bottle to see the colour of the fragrance inside. Beach Walk is the colour of golden sand, whilst my second fragrance Jazz Club is the colour of a vintage malt. Very clever indeed. The labelling is also minimal but contains all you need to know about each scent. The provenance and period and the style description gives a glimpse inside but ultimately, the fragrance is speaking for itself. And speak it does, because I only had to smell Jazz Club before I fell hopelessly in love with this ultra masculine fragrance that draws so many compliments whenever I wear it. Each bottle is an Eau de Toilette at 100ml and I adore the simplistic yet luxurious design of each bottle.

Beach Walk, as an introduction to the brand has set me off completely. Described as ‘A stroll along the ocean. Feet sink into the sand. Waves brush the skin. The sun at its zenith radiates the beach. “Beach Walk” evokes the memory of a summer day’. And that it does. I can feel myself by the ocean, the salty breeze blowing across my face into my hair. Subtle coconut tones are mixed with a sharpness of pink pepper, whilst ylang ylang, heliotrope and bergamot dance across my sunkissed skin. I can literally feel my toes in the sand and that taste of being by the sea. That is exactly how you make a fragrance and I cannot put into words just how many feelings this gives me when I wear it.

Buying a second Replica fragrance on the same day was not intentional but again, as I was trying out the range of scents, I came across Jazz Club. Jazz Club is a male style fragrance but has beautiful notes within it that make it ideal for a female wearer. Described as memories from Brooklyn in 2013, it is a mix of heady cocktails and cigars in a Brooklyn jazz club. ‘An anthology of classic notes and coppery tones, between deep armchairs and a handful of bar stools, with subdued lighting reflected on the piano where cocktails linger, wafting their liquory notes’ is the official blurb to describe Jazz Club and it couldn’t not be more true. I am transported to those nights where we have sat in the speakeasy bars of NYC, sipping on cocktails or a short over ice. Cigar smoke optional! Again, another fragrance that immediately transported me to other times away from the mundane and boring.  Notes of pink pepper, Neroli and lemon, mingle with clary sage, vetiver and rum to bring one of the finest scents I have ever known.

Now that I’ve found Replica and their intense way of bottling certain memories, I think it may be slightly easier to be able to reduce my perfume collection to those fragrances that truly do mean something to me. I do feel that I also need Replica By The Fireside to add to my collection to make me really feel complete in my fragrance journey. If you aren’t heading off through World Duty Free any time soon, you can try out Replica by Maison Margiela at Harvey Nichols

What memory would you bottle up? What would it smell like?
