Beauty Nasties Explained!

Over the last few months, there have been an increasing amount of reports, articles and blog posts about using products that shouldn’t contain certain chemicals and ingredients, but have you ever wondered what exactly they are and why you shouldn’t be using them?

I’ve compiled a little list for your perusal, and hope that it helps when making your choices in what to buy and what not to buy. However, the information I have used has been researched from the internet, and I am in no way scaremongering, or saying this is definitive in its findings. Many companies nowadays are making products and advertising that they do not contain certain ingredients. This post is to create more of an understanding as to why they aren’t used.

Aluminium: Found in spray deodorants and some hand creams. It has been researched and linked to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Diethanolime, Monoethanolomine and Triethanolomine (DEA, MEA and TEA) : Found in shampoos and cosmetics that clean, bubble or foam. They are emulsifiers and can be allergenic or toxic to skin. Can also be disruptive to hormones.

Formaldehyde: Found in nail care products. It is a preservative and is the chemical that is used to kill bugs! Eww. It is also an irritant and can be carcinogenic.

Isopropyl Alcohol: Found in hair colourants, mouthwash and fragrances. It causes the body to be more vulnerable to carcinogens. Can also cause headaches, dizziness and sickness.

Mineral Oil: Found in so many beauty products! Its a derivative of petroleum and unfortunately it works as a barrier on your skin, keeping the good out and the nasties in. Can cause skin flare ups, acne and spots.

Parabens: Found in cosmetics. Can cause irritation and dermal problems to people who are sensitive to parabens, however it has been found most people will not react to them. It has however had links to breast cancer and hormonal disruption although there is conflicting information on this subject and research is still ongoing.

Phthalates: Found in adult and baby products. It is a plasticiser and it can be found in glue and flooring.

Sodium Laurel Sulphate and Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLS and SLES): Found in shampoos or cosmetics that foam and bubble. Both are potential carcinogens, and can strip your skin of protective oils. Also found in toothpaste and can work as a laxative if you swallow your toothpaste.

This list is not exhaustive and there are many more nasties out there that can be found in products, however these are the main ones that keep cropping up over and over again. Its always worth looking at the ingredient list before purchasing products, after all it is your body and your skin you will be applying it too.

I always look for products that don’t include these nasties. SLS really tend to bother my skin which makes it difficult for me to find a good body wash.
