Essential Maintenance Tips for Your Computer
For many of us, our computers are essential tools that get used every day. But how many is us are correctly protecting or maintaining our computers. We have the power to make our computers run longer, faster, and to their optimum well into the future, despite how many new and faster computers are brought out. Overtime issues can arise, meaning that the computer can be damaged or begin slowing down and running inefficiently. These problems can be avoided if we take the time to properly care for our computers. Here are a few essential maintenance tips for you to consider:
Physically Protect your Computer
If you have to take your laptop to and from work, or you like to work in cafes, for example, you need to be careful on how your transport your laptop. There are plenty of options available to you like skins, hardshell snap-on covers, sleeves and messenger bags. All of which offer your laptop that added layer of protection. The last thing you want is it to be exposed to the element and get wet or worse. It also helps if you optimize your working space to protect your computer from spillages.
Update Your OS (Operating System)
Windows 10, for example, will automatically inform you that an update is available. However, all OS’s provide patches and updates designed to fix bugs, upgrade and ensure your computer is running to its optimum. If you do not have this set up automatically you can search for updates manually and install them when you find them. This is one of the most basic ways you can maintain the performance of your computer.
Do Not Overcharge
When you plug in your laptop, ensure you keep an eye on the power levels and unplug it once it hits 99% or 100% to optimize the power of the battery. Also, do not plug it in until the power is actually low, possibly lower than 10% or 5%. Overcharging and charging before you need to can lead to something called regenerative capability deterioration. This is where a laptop is actually unable to hold its charge for any reasonable length of time. Having a laptop that cannot hold its charge can be extremely frustrating and beside the point, as you need to be wired into the wall all the time.
Clean your Disk Space
Regular cleaning of your disk space is essential for the overall health of our computer. If you are running out of space, say that the hard drive has less than 15% on it, your computer may already be running slowly. Delete or uninstall programs you don’t use, and clean up the hard drive. There are several tricks you can make use of. Why not optimize the hard drive, or even use cloud storage or but an external hard drive to transfer any old files such as pictures. The more space you can create on your har drive, the faster it will run. You should also use anti-virus software to ensure that your computer does not get infected with any bug, which will inevitably make it run a lot more slowly.
