Last week I received an email from Giff Gaff asking me to take part in their We’re The Boss campaign and it really struck a cord with me. Over the past few days I’ve been thinking about how I’ve taken control over my life and become the boss, and thought that I definitely needed to write this down for prosperity in the future and for whenever I am going through a bad patch, I can look back on this and think d’ya know what, I am the boss of my life and I can change things to suit.
Back when I was in my youth and at the ripe old age of 21, I knew that I wasn’t being fulfilled in the choices I had made in my career and personal life. I was still young enough to change things and wise enough to be able to put ideas into practice. After a bad break up, I knew it was time to open my mind and widen my horizons so I started to put the wheels in motion to start a new life overseas. The following year, aged 22, I took myself and my 60kg of luggage over to the beautiful island of Mallorca, the place where I would spend the next two years of my life. Like a Boss.
When I hot 24, I realised that life overseas, although amazing, was slowly taking its toll on my body and realistically I wanted to be at home and settled. On my flight home, I got chatting to the cabin crew and decided that flying was the job that I was destined to do. I applied the evening I got home. Fast forward to 2014 and I am still working for the same airline, and I am still loving my job more than I have loved any other job I have had in the past. I took control of my career and now I am living a life that I love. Like a Boss.
Although I spent a year at college, I didn’t find that it suited me at the time. I didn’t enjoy it, I struggled with the differences from school to college, not just academically but socially as well. I just didn’t feel like I fit in. I actually found that I prefered to work rather than study at the time so I dropped out. A few years later I started to regret my decision of not continuing into Higher Education so I took it upon myself to change things. Aged 25, I enrolled as an adult student with the Open University and over the course of three and a half years, I completed a BSc (Hons) in Criminology and Psychological Studies, with a Diploma in Social Policy and Criminology and a Certificate of Higher Education in Social Science. Like a Boss.
So, for all those times when I think that life is getting out of control and that I can’t get a grip on things, I honestly need to start believing in myself. I have changed my life for the better. I have made ideas happen and changed thing I didn’t like. My regrets have been changed to positives and where I hve felt tied down, I’ve spread my wings. Life is what you make it. Be your own boss. We’re all the boss.
