Way back when I was a young girl of 13, I got fitted up for my first ever pair of contact lenses. Bright green in colour, they stood out a mile and I was soon known as ‘Anoushka Green Eyes’. I often think about having those super bright green lenses back in my life but now I’m slightly older, I’m quite set in my ways with certain things. I wear my daily disposable lenses most of the time but I was still dreaming of my youth and my beautiful coloured lenses. Having naturally green eyes, I kept thinking of just how lovely it would be to change my look slightly without it being too vibrant and a huge difference.
Browsing the coloured contact lens section on Vision Direct lead me to a difficult choice. Do I get the bright green lenses again or do I experiment with a new colour? It must have taken me about 4 hours to decide, including asking my Mum. I had turquoise in mind, as I thought the blue over my green eyes would give a really dark, unusual shade that wasn’t too in your face. Turquoise lenses ordered, I sat back and waited for the postie. I’m always a fan of super quick delivery and my new lenses turned up within 48 hours, tracked and in a box that slid straight through the letterbox. Massive bonus points for this, as I am always at work and hate having to chase around after parcels.
Having not worn lenses other than disposables, I did pick up a case and some saline solution from my opticians to rinse, clean and store my new lenses in prior to my lenses arriving as I was so excited to put them to use. When my FreshLook Colorblends in Turquoise arrived, I was so pleased to see that the coloured lenses weren’t block colours and were made to look more natural with the turquoise colour present in the centre but the outer edge of the iris looking more natural. The lenses themselves are monthly disposable, and with the amount of time I wear my lenses for, they each set should last me up to three months, if I take good care of them.
Although I have worn lenses for the best part of twenty years, there’s something about getting a fresh set of lenses that aren’t from my usual brand. I wear the Specsavers own brand dailies and each lens fit my eyes perfectly and I don’t have any fit issues with any of my pairs that I have worn. With a new brand, I always find that it takes a day or two of wear before they start to fit to my eye shape properly until they become ultra comfortable. As I knew what to expect, I wasn’t worried about the first time of wearing these lenses. I did get some slight discomfort when I first put them in but adding a few drops of saline solution to my eyes, and blinking until the lenses fit into place sorted them out.
Application is the same as all other lenses, and the coloured iris part of the lens is uniform circular, so it doesn’t matter how it sits on your eye. I place the lens on my index finger of my right hand and using my index finger of my left hand, I gently lift my upper eyelid. Without actually touching my eye, I place the lens onto my eye and blink it into place. Although it my seem daunting for a new lens wearing to do this, it gets easier in time and practice does make perfect.
As soon as I put the lenses in, I was so pleased that I chose Turquoise. The colour compliments my own eye colour wonderfully and gives me really dark, and almost cartoonish coloured eyes. The change in colour hasn’t been that noticeable to others, which is what I wanted really – I don’t want another nickname just because of the colour of my eyes, yet my close friends and family noticed immediately. After the first day of wear, the lenses became that comfortable that I totally forgot that I had them in. I’ve also had to remind myself that they are monthlies and not dailies and that I shouldn’t be just flicking them out of my eyes and throwing them away.
Now I’ve had chance to wear the FreshLook Colorblends, I’m really contemplating trying the Gemstone Green and Amethyst coloured lenses. It has really opened my mind to using lenses as a quick and easy way to change my look but still keeping things natural. With a quick delivery, great price point and a really good selection of lens colours, I’m really impressed with the service from Vision Direct.
Have you worn coloured lenses before? What colour did you go for?
