In my final part of Lipstick Week, I am dropping in a lipstick that is quite possibly one of the most hyped up and sold out lipsticks in the entire world. Of course I am talking about MAC Velvet Teddy lipstick, the infamous matte brown lip colour as worn by Kylie Jenner, owner of the worlds most controversial, most talked about plumped up lips. Clever makeup trickery or not, you cannot deny just how fantastic she looks and just how good Velvet Teddy looks on her.
I’m going to be honest with you all now. I bought this lipstick purely because of the hype and when it arrived, although it is a lovely nude brown toned lipstick, I don’t think it is very me. I bought Brave at the same time, and I haven’t stopped wearing it, yet Velvet Teddy has just sat there waiting to be reviewed. What I find with Velvet Teddy is that it is so matte and so brown that it has no depth or dimension and it just looks so flat on me. I think when I left the 1990s, I left for a reason! I’m so much more suited to a matte finish in any colour except nude-brown.
Anyway, as with all of my lipstick reviews, let me get to the nitty gritty. MAC describes Velvet Teddy as a deep tone beige in a matte finish. It is exactly as described and also the name does give away the shade. It is very much a plush teddy bear colour. It has a fantastic wear time of 5-6 hours and stays pretty well intact on the lip except when it clings to dry patches. I find the matte formula to be like the newer matte formulas, creamy to apply and it doesn’t drag and pull. It dries out easily on my lips so a bit of balm is needed, which defeats the object of wearing a matte colour however a slight sheen is needed when I wear it to stop it looking so flat. Kylie Jenner, I am not! I think on me it looks like dark concealer covered lips. It’s not my favourite look, and I cannot get this colour to work for me at all although each time I try it on I think I like it, yet I’m really not sure at all.
It isn’t a colour for me, but I have seen so many people wearing this who suit it so much. Just because it doesn’t work for me, doesn’t mean that it won’t work for you so don’t let my review put you off. It really has reiterated to me to stop buying products because of the hype. It is showing as in stock on the MAC website so if you are desperate for one, I’d get one now before it goes out of stock again.
