Although I am pretty well versed in makeup, and I’m quite a dab hand at making my face go from 0 to 100, I am still always on the look out for ways to improve my skills. From poring over YouTube videos and ready beauty books, to sitting through seminars and masterclasses, I soak everything up like a cheap beauty sponge. The latest masterclass I have have had the honour of attending was the Celebrity Makeup Artist Masterclass with Amy’s Makeup Box and Debenhams. Only the second event that they have put on, this was a wonderfully intimate and educational masterclass. Held at the Radisson Blu on Peter Street in Manchester, there were just 15 of us in attendance making this a very interactive experience.
Amy, from Amy’s Makeup Box is a social media influencer and YouTuber boasting neatly half a million subscribers on her YouTube channel. A trained make up artist, her skills have taken her to another level and her tutorials are fantastic. In person, Amy is such a down to earth and humble girl, and although she has this crazy success, you can see that she has this incredible work ethic and her passion for beauty shines through.
The masterclass was scheduled for 6 hours, which included two makeup looks as well as afternoon tea with plenty of refreshment breaks with tea, coffee and cake. To be honest, it’s an actual perfect day for me and you can’t beat cake and makeup. Amy started off with a glowy bridal look, which although I’m not a working artist, I can take the skills on board for my own more natural looks.
I picked up 3 key skills during this look. The first was using brush cleaner on your hand when using a brow pomade as it gives a watercolour effect that can be built up without looking crumbly and flaky. You still get the desired effect and long wear time, but it looks more natural and less Instagram brow like. The second tip I picked up was customising lashes with individual flare lashes, and to use Revlon lash glue as it is latex free.
The third tip from this look is something that has actually changed how I view a certain product. As a huge fan of Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk foundation, sometimes I find it to look too sheer on my skin. Amy’s top tip was to put it onto damp skin to make it look like it has a fuller coverage but it still has the lightweight finish that you want from a sheer foundation. The difference that is has made in application is quite something and these tips are the kind of tips that I love to pick up from masterclasses like this.
The transition from bridal to glam didn’t mean that you needed to learn a whole new skill set, and Amy showed just how simple it was to create a more intense look just by intensifying certain areas. Still using the same foundation, the same way of applying lashes and lips, the subtle differences of application make two vastly different looks. With bridal, a flattering look that contains no glitter and shimmer will ensure beautiful photography, but for glam, it’s fair game.
During the glam look, the eye shadow shades were deepened, the glitter was present, the liner more smoked. Lashes were bigger, contour was added and the glossiest nude lip finished off the look beautifully. As someone who wears more glam makeup than natural, it was nice to see that some of Amy’s must have products were already present in my makeup wardrobe and I have also picked up on some key products that she uses that I really want to add in. The Too Faced Born This Way Loose Setting powder is now on my list.
There are going to be more masterclasses coming up in the future, and I would jump at the chance to see another. I have loved the fact that we have been able to ask questions to Amy, whilst being close enough to view the makeup being applied and to see just how to do it. It’s lessons like this that help perfect your existing skills and shed light on techniques that you may not have known how to do.
With the masterclass being sponsored by Debenhams Beauty Club, we were sent away with an incredible goody bag. To see brands such as Urban Decay, Unicorn Cosmetics and Doll Beauty in there, it was a fantastic treat to end a perfect day. I feel that I have taken so much away with me from the Celebrity Makeup Artist Masterclass and I would totally recommend this to anyone who has a passion for beauty.
